The Flypast

Arguably, my favourite image. I’d photographed this copse many times over the seasons but on this occasion, it was the stillness and the abscence of any sound that transfixed me. Overhead I could hear wings beating and crows chattering as they mobbed a buzzard. I watched the birds fly back and forth for what seemed like an eternity, then they flew away. As I set up to compose my shot of the sheep around the copse, the crows reappeared in the distance, chasing the buzzard , so I quickly recomposed and managed to capture a few frames on film. It’s my favourite image that works brilliantly as a print. It looks to all intents and purposes a very minimalistic image, but it draws the viewer in and they notice the three birds flying past. I never get tired of watching people see the birds for the first time.
